Material & Engineering Overview

By dispersing sub-micron metastable tetragonal zirconia (10–20 wt% 3Y-TZP) uniformly within a high-purity α-alumina matrix, Zirconia-Toughened Alumina (ZTA) bridges the gap between standard 99.5% alumina and pure YSZ zirconia.

Stress-induced tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation at crack tips nearly doubles fracture toughness over monolithic alumina while retaining higher hardness, higher thermal conductivity, and lower cost than pure zirconia.

Standard Shipment Documentation: Manufacturer Lot COA (composition, sintered density, hardness) and CMM dimensional inspection report.

Primary Research & Industrial Applications

  • High-pressure homogenizer pistons, metering pump plungers, and mechanical seal rings
  • Abrasive slurry check-valve balls, seats, and hydrocyclone wear liners
  • Precision grinding spindles, guide rollers, and wire-drawing capstans
  • Orthopedic and biomedical structural load-bearing prototypes

Technical & Procurement FAQ

When should I select ZTA over standard 99.5% Alumina or pure 3Y-TZP Zirconia?
Choose ZTA when 99.5% alumina chips or fractures under mechanical impact, but you need higher hardness, better thermal conductivity, and lower material cost than 100% YSZ.
Does ZTA resist hydrothermal aging better than monolithic YSZ?
Yes. Because the alumina matrix encapsulates and constrains the dispersed zirconia grains, ZTA resists low-temperature hydrothermal degradation in steam and hot water.
Can ZTA be diamond ground and lapped to mirror finishes?
Yes. Fine-grained ZTA polishes to Ra < 0.02–0.05 µm for low-friction dynamic fluid seals.
