Material & Engineering Overview

Platinum-rhodium noble-metal thermocouples (Types R, S, and B) rapidly poison and drift if exposed to silica vapors, metallic fumes, or reducing contaminants above 1,100 °C. Impervious C799 (99.7% Al2O3) closed-one-end protection sheaths combined with twin-bore or four-bore high-purity alumina capillary insulators isolate bare thermocouple wires electrically and chemically up to 1,750 °C.

Available in metric and fractional inch diameters with round closed domes, optional metal mounting collars, and paired multi-bore inner rods.

Standard Shipment Documentation: Manufacturer Lot COA (Al2O3 & SiO2 impurity limit), straightness/bore inspection sheet.

Primary Research & Industrial Applications

  • Type R, S, and B noble-metal thermocouple assemblies up to 1,750 °C
  • Glass tank crowns, ceramic kilns, and vacuum heat-treat furnaces
  • Multi-circuit sensor feedthroughs using 2-bore and 4-bore capillary rods
  • Molten aluminum and non-ferrous pyrometry immersion sheaths

What to Specify in Your Quote Request

Specify outer sheath OD × ID × length (closed-one-end), inner insulator OD × bore diameter × number of bores (2 or 4) × length, thermocouple wire gauge, and operating atmosphere.

Include target quantity, destination country/postal code for express air freight calculation, and any special cleanroom bagging or certification requests.

Technical & Procurement FAQ

Why is low-silica 99.7% (C799) alumina critical for Type R/S/B platinum thermocouples?
Mullite or lower-purity 95% ceramics contain silicate phases that reduce to volatile SiO above 1,200 °C, alloying with platinum wire to cause embrittlement and calibration drift. ≥99.7% Al2O3 keeps SiO2 extremely low.
Can I order matching inner 2-bore or 4-bore insulator rods with outer sheaths?
Yes—specify both the outer COE protection tube dimensions and the inner multi-bore rod OD and bore diameter so clearances are matched on a single quote.
How are long narrow thermocouple tubes packaged for air express?
Slender ceramic tubes are bundled in rigid PVC or double-wall heavy cardboard tubes suspended inside high-density foam-lined wooden or export cartons to prevent transit bending shock.
