Material & Engineering Overview

Molybdenum (melting point 2,623 °C, density 10.22 g/cm³—nearly half the weight and cost of tungsten) is the workhorse structural metal of carbon-free hydrogen and vacuum furnaces up to 1,700–1,900 °C. Folded, riveted, or deep-drawn molybdenum sintering boats carry MIM stainless/titanium parts, tungsten-carbide compacts, rare-earth magnets, and nuclear/technical ceramics through walking-beam and batch H2 furnaces.

Where pure Mo recrystallizes and creeps under heavy load above 1,150 °C, Ti-Zr-Mo (TZM) and oxide-dispersion lanthanated Mo (Mo-La) extend structural creep strength to 1,400–1,750 °C.

Standard Shipment Documentation: Manufacturer Mill Lot COA (ASTM B386/B387 chemical analysis, temper/hardness, thickness/dimensional check).

Primary Research & Industrial Applications

  • Hydrogen & vacuum furnace sintering boats/trays for MIM, ceramics, and magnets
  • Multi-layer reflective metallic vacuum-furnace heat shields, hearth rails, and Mo bolts/nuts
  • Semiconductor ion-source components, sputtering backing plates, and X-ray anodes
  • TZM isothermal forging dies, hot-runner nozzles, and brazing fixtures

What to Specify in Your Quote Request

Specify grade (Pure Mo up to 1,150 °C or low stress; Mo-La for anti-sag sintering boats and heaters up to 1,750 °C; TZM for high mechanical load), form (folded/riveted boat L×W×H×wall, sheet/plate, rod, crucible, or M4–M16 fasteners), surface finish (electrolytically/alkaline bright cleaned), and quantity.

Include target quantity, destination country/postal code for express air freight calculation, and any special cleanroom bagging or certification requests.

Technical & Procurement FAQ

Why do lanthanated molybdenum (Mo-La) sintering boats last much longer than pure Mo boats above 1,300 °C?
Pure molybdenum develops coarse equiaxed grains above 1,100 °C that turn room-temperature brittle and sag; doped La2O3 dispersoids form interlocking elongated fiber grains that stay ductile after cooling and resist bottom warping.
Can molybdenum boats hold alumina or zirconia parts directly without reaction?
Yes—molybdenum is chemically compatible with dense Al2O3 and ZrO2 in high vacuum or dry hydrogen up to ~1,700–1,800 °C.
Do you supply matching molybdenum hex bolts, nuts, washers, and threaded rods?
Yes—standard metric (M3–M16) and inch molybdenum and TZM fasteners, spacers, and rivets are available from stock/machining.
