Material & Engineering Overview

Unlike tungsten and molybdenum—which embrittle after high-temperature recrystallization—electron-beam melted tantalum (mp 3,017 °C) and niobium (mp 2,477 °C) remain extraordinarily ductile even at cryogenic temperatures and after high-vacuum thermal cycling. At chemical process temperatures (<150–200 °C), tantalum's passive Ta2O5 film rivals glass and PTFE against boiling HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, and bromine; in high vacuum (<10⁻⁵ Torr), tantalum crucibles and foils serve as non-carburizing barriers for rare-earth metals, actinide/lanthanide distillation, and SPS punch liners.

Supplied as bright cold-rolled vacuum-annealed foils (down to 10–25 µm), plates, rods, seamless tubes, and seamless deep-drawn or welded crucibles.

Standard Shipment Documentation: Manufacturer Mill Lot COA (ASTM B708/B365/B393 ICP & interstitial C/O/N/H ppm assay, temper, dimensional check).

What to Specify in Your Quote Request

Specify Tantalum vs. Niobium (or Ta-2.5W / Ta-10W alloy), purity (3N5 vs. 4N), form (foil thickness × width × length, rod, tube, or seamless deep-drawn crucible OD × wall × height), annealed vs. hard-rolled temper, and operating environment.

Include target quantity, destination country/postal code for express air freight calculation, and any special cleanroom bagging or certification requests.

Technical & Procurement FAQ

Can tantalum or niobium be heated in hydrogen or nitrogen furnaces?
NO—above ~250–350 °C, both Ta and Nb aggressivelygetter hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and water vapor, causing severe hydride/nitride embrittlement. Always run high-temperature Ta/Nb hardware in high vacuum (<10⁻⁵ Torr) or Ti-gettered 5N+ argon.
Why do SPS researchers place 0.025–0.05 mm tantalum foil discs inside graphite dies?
Thin ductile tantalum foil placed between ceramic/metal sample powder and graphite punches blocks carbon inward diffusion during Spark Plasma Sintering up to 1,800+ °C.
What chemicals attack tantalum?
Tantalum is inert to almost all acids (including aqua regia and boiling HCl/HNO3/H2SO4) below 150 °C, EXCEPT hydrofluoric acid (HF), fluoride ions, fuming SO3, and strong hot caustic alkalis.
