Material & Engineering Overview
In Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (PEMWE), the anode Porous Transport Layer (PTL / LGDL) operates at >1.8–2.2 V in acidic wet-oxygen environments that instantly dissolve carbon paper (Toray GDL) and stainless steel. Vacuum-sintered non-woven micron titanium fiber felt combines 55%–75% open porosity for simultaneous liquid-water feed and O2 bubble evacuation with smooth, non-puncturing membrane contact and high electrical/thermal conductivity.
Available bare or electroplated/PVD-coated with ultra-thin platinum (Pt) or IrO2 protective layers to eliminate TiO2 interfacial contact resistance over multi-thousand-hour stack tests, plus sintered Ti powder plates (0.5–5.0 mm).
Standard Shipment Documentation: Manufacturer Lot COA (Ti purity %, average thickness, bulk porosity %, Pt coating thickness/loading if coated).

Technical & Procurement FAQ
Why do PEM electrolyzer researchers specify platinum-coated Ti felt over bare Ti felt?
Above ~1.6 V vs. RHE on the PEM oxygen anode, bare titanium slowly grows a semi-insulating TiO2 oxide skin that increases high-frequency ohmic cell resistance (HFR); a 0.2–0.5 µm Pt coating keeps interfacial contact resistance low and stable.
How is titanium felt cut without crushing the edge pores or leaving sharp burrs that pierce Nafion membranes?
Sheets are laser-cut, wire-EDM cut, or precision die-sheared and roll-leveled flat so zero raised fiber burrs puncture thin PFSA proton-exchange membranes.
What is the difference between sintered Ti fiber felt and sintered Ti powder plates?
Fiber felt (0.2–1.0 mm, 60%–75% porosity) is flexible, thin, and has much lower mass-transport resistance for high-current PEMWE cells, whereas sintered Ti powder plates (1.0–3.0 mm, ~30%–45% porosity) are rigid mechanical plates favored for high-differential-pressure spargers or rigid filter supports.
