Material & Engineering Overview

High-energy planetary ball milling and stirred bead milling of battery active materials (LFP, NMC, sulfide/oxide solid electrolytes), piezoelectric/structural ceramics, phosphors, and pharmaceuticals cannot tolerate ppm iron contamination from steel balls or rapid silica/alumina wear from cheaper media. Sintered 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (95% ZrO2, 6.0 g/cm³) delivers 65% higher kinetic impact energy than alumina at 10–30× lower ppm wear rates.

We supply both mirror-polished spherical grinding media (0.1 mm micro-beads through 20–30 mm balls) and matching O-ring-sealed planetary mill jars (50, 100, 250, 500, and 1,000 mL, including glovebox vacuum/inert gas valve lids), plus agate, tungsten carbide, alumina, and PTFE jars.

Standard Shipment Documentation: Manufacturer Lot COA (ZrO2/Y2O3 %, trace Fe2O3/SiO2/Al2O3 ppm, specific gravity, sphericity & HV hardness).

Primary Research & Industrial Applications

  • Zero-iron wet & dry mechanochemical synthesis of battery cathodes, Si anodes, and solid electrolytes
  • Sub-micron & nano dispersion milling of electronic ceramics, MLCC BaTiO3, and pigments
  • Planetary ball milling under argon inside gloveboxes (vacuum-valve lid jars)
  • High-viscosity ink, slurry, and pharmaceutical attrition bead milling

What to Specify in Your Quote Request

For grinding media, specify ball diameter(s)—many labs combine e.g. 3 mm + 5 mm + 10 mm balls—and weight per size (500 g, 1 kg, 5 kg). For planetary jars, specify volume (mL), planetary mill brand/clamp height (Retsch, Fritsch, Across International, MSE/generic), solid ceramic vs. 304SS protective jacket, gasket elastomer, and whether vacuum/inert-gas purge valves are needed.

Include target quantity, destination country/postal code for express air freight calculation, and any special cleanroom bagging or certification requests.

Technical & Procurement FAQ

Why is yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, 6.0 g/cm³) far superior to magnesia- or silicate-zirconia media?
Zirconium silicate (~4.0 g/cm³) and Mg-PSZ wear far faster and shed SiO2/MgO into your powder; true 95% YSZ (3Y-TZP, ≥6.0 g/cm³) has ultra-fine ~0.3 µm tetragonal grains with minimal wear and maximum impact kinetic energy.
Can planetary zirconia jars be sealed inside an argon glovebox for sulfide solid-electrolyte milling?
Yes—specify stainless-steel-jacketed YSZ jars with dual needle/ball gas-purge valves and clamped Viton/PTFE O-ring lids engineered for air-sensitive mechanochemistry.
Are Tungsten Carbide (WC-Co) and Agate planetary mill jars & balls also available?
Yes—cemented tungsten carbide (~14.8 g/cm³ for ultra-hard high-energy alloying), natural Brazilian agate, 99.5% alumina, silicon nitride, and PTFE jars/balls can all be quoted.
